I don't see any references to 5.5 beta. Thats why everytime I try to overwrite it, I get the message "a newer version encountered. Cannot install this version (5.1))
In one of the faq messages on uninstalling IE5.5, I discovered that you CAN'T! Its part of the Window 98 program! Best you can do is revert to an earlier version of IE! Since I don't have an earlier version backed up on my system, I keep getting error messages!

Something's gotta be doing you in the registry.

Tried that Tony. My win98 is fully updated. When I tried to reinstall Explorer, I get the message "existing version detected, cannot install 5.1
I've deleted every trace of Explorer 5.5, including shortcuts. In the system control 'remove' program, Explorer will only allow you to 'repair' or 'reinstall', not delete. Neither repair or reinstall work!
How in the hell do I get rid of Explorer 5.5?

A lightbulb poped on in my head.
After thinking about it and re-readding some of the posts.
Download reg clean from M$, it does a good job and it's free
That may be a start to get you going.
Download it here ->Reg Clean
That's the safest way to clean the reg i've seen. Works on all 9x/NT/2000 systems so far
Looking for a large peice of wood to knock on and hoping to find a 4 leaf clover by it
Cheers for now,
Chuck

Yesterday, George said he found an MS FAQ that stated that IE was built right into the windows 98 operating system, and that he squeaky-cleaned his PC to rid the viscious villan, but it kept haunting him. apparently, the dll may be a rogue dll, and according to GEM, works not with versions of IE other than version 5.5, which was out, then pulled, but will be released again in the future.
I guess the only question left is "how much will be lost when the os gets reinstalled?"

This isn't the best method, but it works in a pinch. Saves most* of you data that's not in the Windows directory.
1.)Boot off a Windows 98 boot disk
Choose option 1.Enable cd-rom
2.)at the a: prompt type:
deltree /y c:\windows
c:\windows is the default install location so if you installed elsewhere change c:\windows to that location.
**NOTE** Deltree is ABSOLUTE! make sure you have the right directory.
3.)once thats done, change dirs' to where ever the boot disk assigned the cd drive.
i.e. cd e:
Once your on the cd drive insert the Windows 9x cd and type: setup
This now starts the painful reinstall with out a full format.
Cheers,
Chuck
-->This works on most machines that don't have a properteriy(spelling) recovery cd.
*Some programs will remain functional after this method all you do is create the shortcuts and your in business,Others when they install as you know install .DLLs into the system dir and won't run till you reinstall the program. Just install over itself and you should be good to go!
**If you copied the cd to the harddrive so you woundn't have to insert the cd just change dirs' to that location and type setup.

All I can say is that Microsoft really knows how to make their money as well as frustrate the multitudes at the same time. Don't they?

Chuck: Regclean worked!! My system is working OK now. I'll have to wait until Microsoft decides to release 5.5 Explorer before I can fix my beta version. But at least everything seems to be functioning.
Thanks again.
George
